but the holder is not robust enough to give good control of the threads
The Dies work, but the holder is not robust enough to give good control of the threads, especially when you are starting the thread at the top of a rod. The Die does not feel like a good fit, the screw does not clamp the die well, and the handles are too small, even for the small dies. I have not tried cutting a large thread, but i would imagine it is not practical. My first next step is to go out and buy a much better die holder.

When Whitworth Threads don't match Si Joseph Whitworth's threads
Taps and dies appear to be well made and accurate as far as modern Whitworth threads go.... just not for original threads made by the Manchester Ordnance and Rifle Company or Whitworth Rifle Company. Instead of 1/4"x24 tpi, the original threads are 26 tpi.
