Do we need to purchase hot wheels cars specifically? or does this work with "off brand" (matchbox) cars?

Yes you do. You have to get the hot wheels that says 1.64 weight for it to work.  I bought the regular to see if they worked and they didn't they were to heavy  of you scroll to the bottom of the page on here it will say add additional cars or tracks. And you can purchase some
