Great read, very relatable
This was a nice break from my typical read. Ms. Gretchen hands down was my favorite character lol. I really enjoyed how a positive point of view was summarized from what some may consider a lifetime of pain. It’s important we don’t forget to get good you have to accept the bad too.

Great Read
I totally enjoyed reading this book! I could relate on so many levels! Black women over all have to be twice as good never really knowing when good is good enough. Well written, I highly recommend it.

Good but Surface
I picked this book for my book club. The story jumps right in. Not a real build up to the doctor’s visit and the over the top reaction to being pulled over. It’s one thing to be scarred in this day and time in the US but Tabitha acted like she was smuggling drugs across the border.Tabitha Walker is a tv news reporter that is running around trying to full-fill other people’s expectations of her without really living her life. The exhaustion seems to come from within. She thinks she should be married and have kids when that sometime in the future eventual reality fall right at #1 on her to-do list after a visit with her doctor. Now in her mind everyone must get onboard her path in life and if they have their own plans then all hell will break loose. There are parts of this book that will make you cry, laugh and decide you want to be Ms. Gretchen when you grow-up. Maybe because this is a trilogy the relationships seem to be surface. Even the BFF’s Tabitha, Lexi and Laila all talk at each other instead of to each. Tabby and Lexi talk about Laila instead of telling her what’s on their minds. True BFF’s tell each other deep things and put it all on the table. Otherwise you’re not BFF you’re just acquaintances. Even Tabby’s relationship with her father is surface. She’s doesn’t even tell her grandmother everything but who does. The whole time I was waiting for Tabby to have a real friend that slapped her and told her to get it together. Her reaction to Marc’s truth was so selfish. He tells her the truth and event though it hurt it was also her truth less than a week ago so how are you going to be that mad at him.The storytelling keeps you interested, and I stayed up late one night because I wanted to read the confrontation between Tabby and her father in chapter 24 and it was nothing more than some vague, philosophical answer as to why he treated her mother the way he did.I hope book 2 and 3 goes deeper. My book club liked it but not enough to recommend reading book 2 and 3. Personally I might read further just to see what the characters are up to.

Enjoyable read that kept my interest. Main character was relatable and I was able to see myself in some of her experiences.

Great read just felt like it was missing a little something
I really enjoyed the development of this story. It was not what I was expecting based on the title. I liked the story line just wish it gave me a little more umph so to speak.

Exceptional
It was so relatable as a black woman. The words flowed so smoothly and felt almost like poetry. Such a good read, I'm looking forward to reading the remainder of the trilogy series.

Thoroughly enjoyed!
Highly recommend this book for both the story and the fact it gives voice to the issues affecting black women in society and the workplace. I feel that any black woman in their 30s would relate to at least one of the many topics touched on in this book and I’ll definitely be moving on to book 2 next to see how the story develops :)

Review
An excellent story showing the wide range of what life is like for black American girls in American society. A range of pertinent questions were discussed and some were left unanswered.

Very repetitive
Great story and great book, but it’s very very repetitive. It feels like the author needed to add more words so she just ended up rehashing old narratives again and again (how many times do we need to be reminded of the main character’s wish to have her grandmother to live with her?). The author could have benefitted from one more thorough edit but overall, it’s a good quick read.
