Q: Do you have to use special packaged ingredients or can you buy your own fresh fruits, veggies etc

Ours work great. My daughter has used many different kind of fruit juice and all seem to slush up very nicely. So much in fact she often complains that it slushes up too quickly and becomes ice before she can begin to enjoy the treat. Remember to keep stirring it around once you pour the juice inside.

Q: Why can't I just put the coke in the cup while cup is sitting in the freezer?

Whatever you put in the slushie maker needs to move as it freezes. If you just put it in the freezer, it will turn into a rock or you'll have your treat hard frozen on the outside and liquid on the inside. You'd have to wait for it to soften before you can eat it. I love mine and have been using it almost daily for years.
