King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table: Roger Lancelyn Green (Puffin Classics)

Having read reviews which claim this book is written in language which is archaic, it left me wondering exactly what the reviewers were expecting. From their words, I was anticipating something between the King James Bible and Shakespeare. This book is nothing of the sort. The language is clear and fully comprehensible yet gives a flavour of yesteryear in the re-telling of the Arthurian Legend. Had other reviewers referred to Sir Thomas Malory's work, 'Le Morte d'Arthur' published in 1485 by William Caxton, I might have understood where they were coming from. Have no fear, this book is entirely suitable for children of ten years and upwards who will discover the tales exciting and memorable. Every child should be given the opportunity of uncovering the gems of British mythology as it forms part of who we are and why. It is a lead to studying British history and beyond. The tales have a good flow and are comprehensive. The book is also perfect for reading aloud. There are no colourful illustrations but there are plentiful woodcuts and the emphasis is placed on each story. I thoroughly recommend it.

The story of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is one of the most enduring of our legends and this book, with its beautiful black and white woodcut engravings, is probably the definitive interpretation of the story to give to a child to read for himself or herself, or be read aloud to at bedtime. I had it when I was 10 or 11 and have re-read it many times over very many years. It is a perfect book to be given to an imaginative child and its somewhat old-fashioned language and its excellent vocabulary will enrich a child's appreciation of good English literature without being in any way stuffy or prosaic.

Bought this for my grandson and he really enjoyed reading it.

I bought this as I remembered reading it at school about 35 years ago. It didn't disappoint - all those adventures brought back to life. A good entertaining read for any adult and will undoubtedly get the kids away from the TV or game console.

This is the definitive King Arthur tale for me, beautifully shaped by Roger Lancelyn Green and with excellent illustrations (taken from woodcuts I believe). Tales told in such a way that magic, moral, mystery and romance are woven together in an enchanting mix

informative, well made compilation...exciting...

I still love it - the illustrations, woodcuts or lino cuts by Lotte Reiniger are superb - and Lancelyn Greens telling of the story is as romantic as one would wish. (Romance in the broader sense)
