The tester primarily reacts to the increse in acidity of oil.As the oil degrades,it becomes more acidic and will begin to pit metal engine parts.The red LED #10 reading usually means that the level of acid in the oil has reached a maximum acceotable level, and the oil should be changed. However, other contaminants(such as dirt, soot, water, antifreeze and metal particles)also influence the reading.Water or antifreeze in the oil may indicate a bad seal or head gasket.Metal particles result from unusual wear of bearings,pistons,rings, etc. Excessive carbon or soot may be caused by poor compression and excessive blow-by.Fuel leaking can dilute the oil and may cause an artificially good oil quality reading.If test results show that oil quality does not drop as expected over time,or seems to imporove,check engine for fuel leaks.(Try a drop of oil on paper, Look for a gray ring.)If a significantly worse oil rating than expected is displayed, we recommend having the engine checked, or send a sample to an oil laboratory for analysis.

Disappointing But I'll Try Again
I was excited when the OTO300 engine oil analyzer arrived but very disappointed when I found that it was DOA. I installed the supplied batteries according to instructions but it wouldn't power up. So, then I tried a new set of batteries with the same results. Then I used a digital multi-meter to check the batteries and they all checked out fine. The unit has a little quality control inspection sticker on the back so, unless that is just there for looks, someone failed to do their job. This unit looks like a near clone of Lubricheck's oil analyzer that I've read good reports on but, at a much lower price. So, I may try purchasing it one more time. Especially since Lubricheck's unit isn't currently available on Amazon. If the next unit works properly I may revise my rating upward accordingly.

Do not waste your time and money
Do not waste your time and money. This doesn't work at all. I returned my first purchase as it did not work at all, second purchase, also doesn't work at the point that the sensor doesn't provide any readings. I am returning this item and requesting a refund.
