Nice radio with a lot of power

This is a great radio with a lot of power. Just be careful you don't run it on high all the time. You don't really need 50 watts consistently when you're talking to the next town over. 50 watts is when you're talking to the next country over!

BTech hits the mark again!

First impression: Fits the BTech radio mold - first class rig! Many color options for display are nice and can customize for your eyes. I like the dark screen with lighter text. Just easier to see. Just got it programmed with CHIRP and discovered a few things you will need to know. First, the power supply connection is not labeled. The red wire goes to the positive terminal while the black wire goes to the ground terminal. Next no where in manual does it indicate when or how to utilize the PC-04 programming cable. I have several BTech UV-82HP HTs. On these you turn radio off, connect via program cable, then turn radio on. I contacted BTech and they advise can plug in program cable to UV-50X2 at any time, radio on or off. I tried and works. In CHIRP on 'Settings Tab' there are many options. It took me quite a while to figure out which options correspond to the menu items on the radio. But once found and options selected, radio is programmed and works great. Menu system very similar to that of UV-82HP so if familiar with most Baofeng HTs will have no problem with this Baofeng mobile. Internal speaker sounds nice and Tx/Rx reports indicate full quieting. I will update this review after a few weeks use.Update 24 April: Still impressed with this rig. Read reviews on BTech UV-25X2 for some tips on CHIRP and Menu programming that work on the UV-50X2 as well. I continue to tweak settings like squelch to fit my taste. No problems found with radio. Fan kicks in when long Tx but reasonable decibel level and goes off quick. If you are in Channel mode and wish to change to a different channel you can of course turn the lower left dial. However, a much quicker way if you know the channel number is to enter the number on the mic keypad. The rig will move to that channel. Remember all channels are two digits so channel 6 would be keyed in as '06.' I keep a list of programmed channels near my rig so finding the channel number is easy.

I’m done trying

Unboxed this unit and was pleased with the construction of it from the start. Solid case on the unit along with a good heavy power cord and lots of it. Easy to read screen and very loud when turned up. Very easy to program using CHIRP as well.Well had to do an update to this review, I managed to smoke the transmitter on the first one at low power in the proper SWR range. Sent it back after a painful RMA process at my expense. Got a radio in return with a chip in the case at the top of the display. Powered the unit on and programmed it. Set it up to transmit for the first time yesterday and got an awful whine heard on both ends. Powered it off and left it sit until today. Powered on only the power supply which is a quality Astron and heard a pop, turned the radio on and when trying to transmit got no output. Guess we smoked another transmitter. This will be the last one as I’m done and am not spending another $15 to ship again only to smoke a third unit. You can buy a decent new Yaesu or used quality dual bander for what this unit costs

About 10months after buying this I had a issue with it which was possibly my fault. Btech absolutely stood by their product and took great care of me. I came back to edit my review to say they earned a customer!I'm new to all this! I have this 50w at the house, their 25w in the car. This radio works great and I did a half a** job setting it up. I literally bought a magnetic car antenna then stuck it to my garage vent. No doubt that can be done alot better but I can talk house to car everywhere I've gone around the city I live in and that's exactly what I wanted it to do so I'm very happy with both. Chirp program was easy after I got the single plug cord ugh. Options through chirp were great. Programming without free chirp software wasn't fun but you can do it. Hope my Newby review helps someone out there in the Amazon. Also free advice I bet you could do what I set out to do with two 25w radios and save $100 but hey whatever

Generally works well and the price is great.

I bought 2 of these units (BETCH Mobile UV-50X2) to communicate between vehicles on a trip to Alaska - 10,000 miles and three months. This gave them a good test. Generally, they worked well. Both units would occasionally squeal during trans mission and one unit switched frequencies a few times with no user input. While we experienced no problems with the mic cord, its attachment to the radio seems less than robust. The internal speaker is more than adequate. While our vehicles were seldom more that a mile apart, using low power transmission was sufficient. Programming from the mic is very convoluted but with the optional USB programming cable, CHIRP works very well (and easy) to set up memorized frequencies. I highly recommend getting the optional cable to save a lot of frustration.

Nice transceiver for the money

This radio was purchased to replace a 22 year old Ham Radio Kenwood TM-V7 with a failed "cool blue" display. I did not get the optional programming cable because I like to field program my transceivers for familiarity sake in an emergency. On a scale of 1 to 10 I think the manual is a 5. It was very lame in describing how to set a split memory for a repeater into a memory channel. I don't think Btech could have made it more confusing if they tried. You can program a split into a VFO position but not transfer it to a memory position! Yikes! What were your engineers thinking? Secondly, there was no info in the manual about what mic buttons to press to enter text. After two hours of trial and error I finally figured it out. On the positive side, the VHF high power was 56 watts and 40 watts on UHF using an HP 8924C Service Monitor. The output spectrum was also clean of spurious signals. After a 24 hour burn in, the radio was surprisingly cool to the touch. It takes very little power on idle. For the price and the ability to display four frequencies at once, I think the radio is a great value. Bob, WX2NJ
