Hi Jared - this does not include the track - only the train pieces.

Q: The train has no button that I can see. Putting in the battery simply turns it on with no way of turning it off. Is this incorrect?

Hi - There is not a separate on/off button. The buttons on top make it go and stop, but the batteries shouldn't be used when it is stopped.

Q: Does this work with other tracks like melissa and doug brands?

Not for certain i have brio my sis got the same thing and has Hape brand track too and said it fit on there.....so my guess is its a standard size wooden track but not for certain

Once the batteries are in just press down on the "spot" on top and it activates it. I had to go to a train store to find out.
