Crystal clear water… every time!
I use this Marineland Magnum polishing filter every time I clean the the tank and change water. The results are spectacular within the hour producing crystal clear water. The filter typically lasts for more than a year with a quick rinse between uses. Great quality and value for an integral piece of my aquarium maintenance.

Make sure the ends of filter are blue.
I use these filters to polish my large freshwater tanks after a cleaning and water change. They leave water crystal clear after 24 hours. I have been using these filters with canisters originally, and now with the smaller polishing filters. They can be shipped with blue endcaps, or with a greenish blue endcap. They are cleaned by soaking in chorine solution overnight. The paperwork with the filter call for a 3:1 solution of water to bleach. The endcaps of the blue-green filter will severely degrade into a slime with this concentration. i contacted Marineland about this, and they said I was supposed to be using a 9:1 solution, claiming the paperwork with filter was outdated. The filters with blue endcaps show no degradation at any concentration. If I receive any with blue-green endcaps, I return them. I have 16 filters, 5 that are blue-green and exhibit this problem. They are tacky to the touch even when cleaned at the lower concentation.

Wonderful filter
This filter insert does a fantastic job of removing suspended debris from my tank. I change it twice a week, using two filters in rotation. My first pair lasted one year. My best advice is to follow cleaning instructions, and do not use any mechanical means of cleaning. Don't use your fingers, a brush or anything. Just spray with water removing as much junk as possible, then soak in a 25% solution of chlorine bleach for about 24 hours. Then rinse thoroughly and air-dry. They look like new with this treatment.UPDATE:I have also learned that these filters age over time in spite of appearing to clean up quite well with chlorox. I find that my old filters work well for a week or more while the new ones show reduced flow and some filter noise after 2-3 days. Same tank and filter housing. I find that the new ones are filtering better, by not letting as much material through, thus they are loading up faster. This is actually what you want. The water is even cleareer as a result.Well, I thought if 24 hours soaking in bleach solution is good, how about 5 or 6 days. DON'T DO IT. The rubber on the filter starts to dissolve and become very sticky. Had to discard. Stick with the instructions! Don't do what I did.Still a fantastic product!!Good luck.

Diatomaceous Earth works great
I see some reviews had trouble priming this unit with D-Earth. I have used it that way about a dozen times and have not had any problem. I too used a 5 gallon container, and per instructions I filled the bucket with water high enough to cover the unit. Then turned the unit on and then put in 6 tablespoons of D-Earth (Harris Earth Food Grade). It took about 20-30 minutes before the buckets water was clear. I let it run an extra 20 minutes.I have found that you must handle the unit like it was filled with nitroglycerin when moving it from the bucket to the aquarium. The more it gets shaken the more D-earth will come out after you start it inside the aquarium. Expect some no matter how gently you handle it. Not to worry though, it will clear it up. At least it always did in my 70 gallon aquarium. I let mine run overnight each time.As for those who had problems. I can only guess that perhaps the washer placed on the inside of the filter that the cartage rests on was missing or not centered. Or the cartridge itself was defective or too much or too little d-earth was used.D-Earth increases water polishing significantly.

Excellent at removing algae from water before it attaches to aquarium surfaces.
I keep several of these cartridges on hand to swap out of the two Magnum HOT external water polishers I have on our two large tanks. When one of them gets dirty I just change it out with a clean filter, and soak the dirty one in a 20% bleach/water solution for a few hours, then rinse and soak it in two clean water baths for another few hours each. I them let them air-dry and put them back into the rotation for use as needed. I love these cartridges as they not only help keep the water crystal clear, they filter out all of the microscopic water-borne algae before it has a chance to attach itself to plants, wood and glass. I run the water polishers on a timer for a few hours each day, augmenting the regular carbon filters which run 24/7. It means changing out these cartridges every 3 or 4 days, but having extras on hand make it relatively painless and well worth the time I save by not having to clean tanks and mechanically remove algae on a frequent basis.
